As the winter months approach, it is important to prepare your boat and boat trailer for the cold weather ahead. Winterizing your boat and trailer is a great way to protect the longevity of both and ensure that your vessel remains in tip-top shape for the following spring. Here are some helpful tips for winterizing your boat and boat trailer.

Check Your Tires

  • Check the tire pressure of your boat trailer tires and make sure they are properly inflated. If they're underinflated, you may experience a flat tire due to the cold weather as cold tires will naturally deflate.
  • Check the tire treads and make sure they have enough tread to grip the road. A good rule of thumb is to do a penny test, using a penny, turn the penny so Lincoln's head goes down into the tread, and as long as the tread touches his head or his head disappears, you are good to go. If the tread is too worn, or shows signs of uneven wear, replace the tires.
  • If the tires have been in storage for a while, inspect them for cracks, dry rot, and other signs of wear and tear.

Clean and Dry Your Boat

  • Thoroughly rinse off the outside of your boat with fresh water. This will help remove any salt, dirt, and debris that may have accumulated during your last trip.
  • Once your boat is dry, spray it with a protective coating to help protect it from the elements.
  • Open all the hatches and compartments and make sure they are dry and free of moisture.
  • Remove any cushions and other items that can be stored inside your boat and store them in a dry, warm place.

Secure Your Boat and Trailer

  • Before putting your boat and trailer into storage, make sure it's properly secured. Hitch locks, cables, wheel boots, battery shut-offs, etc. are great investments as theft is a crime of opportunity. The harder you make it for someone to steal your boat, the more likely they are to move on and look for an easier target. This will help protect them from theft and vandalism.
  • If you are storing your boat and trailer outside, invest in a good quality cover and make sure it is properly secured. This will help protect your vessel from the elements.
  • If you're storing your boat and trailer inside, make sure that the hatches, doors, and windows or windshield are properly secured. (each boat will vary)

Protect Your Boat from Freezing Temperatures

  • If you are storing your boat in an area that is prone to freezing temperatures, it is important to protect it from the cold.
  • Make sure all the water lines and plumbing are drained of any water. This will help prevent them from freezing and cracking, which can cause major water issues the next time you take your boat out.
  • If your boat has a battery, make sure it is disconnected and stored in a warm, dry place.
  • If your boat has an engine, make sure you add the antifreeze to help protect it from the cold.

These are just a few of the tips for winterizing your boat and boat trailer. By following these simple steps, you can help protect your vessel and ensure it is in top condition for the following spring. With proper preparation, you can be sure that your boat and trailer will be ready for the upcoming summer months.
